No Limit Tourney: Getting into the Proper Mindset
There are a lot of things that you have to prepare for when competing in a Texas No Limit Holdem tournament, but one of the most important is that of your mental attitude. Having the correct mental and psychological approach to the game is absolutely crucial.
First of all, you have to accept the fact that while the prize money in No Limit tourneys is large, they are usually only for the latter tables. There is no cash prize for the early stages.
It is very possible, even likely, that in your first attempts at a No Limit tourney that you play for two hours and end up with nothing. That should not discourage you from participating in future tourneys. It is something that you simply have to accept.
The emphasis is of course on survival, and this entails that you be mentally prepared to change your Poker strategies. This is something that a lot of players find very difficult to do, especially if it has brought them great success in No Limit cash games. However, it is important to realize that cash games and No Limit tourneys are very different from one another.
Part and parcel of a proper No Limit mindset is that of being calm and composed. In the early stages you may be overwhelmed by the number of loose cannons and fish, making all those wild plays. In the latter tables it would be the sharks and very aggressive players.
Try to remain clam, and stick to your game plans. If you let your emotions get the better of you, it will show in your physical actions. This can easily be picked up by the other Poker players on the table.
Once you are read by the other individuals, then all your moves will be known; your hands will be easily identified, and before you know it, you will be down to your last chips.
The importance of keeping your composure and not showing any tells cannot be overstated in tournament play.
A majority of new No Limit Tournament players spend hours working on strategies, only to find themselves mentally faltering when at the actual table. It is important that you maintain your composure, before and during play.
Having the right mental attitude, and also remaining focused before and during the match, will no doubt give you the needed edge to beat the odds and win it all.
